Athletics Awards Explained

Sader with Sword Logo

So, you are the parent of a Newman student-athlete and have attended, possibly for four years, what seemed to be a never ending series of games throughout the season, supporting the team in their contests all over the county and beyond…

Admit it. You are guiltily glad that the season is over and that you are now sitting and having a great time enjoying the end of the season Banquet. To top it all off, you may even be the proud parent of a sports award receiver.

Extra credit question: Do you know the criteria that sports awards are based on?

Good news. Here is a breakdown:

Most Valuable Player: The MVP is awarded to a player chosen by his or her peers. Only team players vote on this Award.
Crusader Award: The Crusader Award is presented to an outstanding player selected by the coach or coaches of the team.
Alumni Award: The Alumni Award is intended for a senior who possesses great work ethic and attitude in addition to athletic ability.

Father Farrell, S.J. Award (Football only): This Award is given to a senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0, and who is a starter displaying an excellent attitude and good conduct.

There you have it. We hope the descriptions were helpful and that you are as excited as we are about the start of a new season. Just not until next year, though…

Travis Rudolph scores his first touch down for FSU.

If you follow college sports, you know that things are going well for Travis Rudolph (’14). His progress at the college level has been evident as noted in this article from the Tallahassee Democrat:

Florida State WRs Travis Rudolph, Ermon Lane are ‘ready’
Jimbo Fisher says the pair of freshmen wideouts are proving that they are ready to take on bigger roles for the ‘Noles.
Check out the story

But Travis’ turn on the spotlight came last weekend, during the 43-3 FSU rout of Wake Forest. Travis caught a 59-yard pass for his first touchdown of his college career.

Crusaders in the Palm Beach High School Baseball All Star Game

Last night, all four of our Class of 2014 Crusader Baseball Players, Daniel Cole, Patrick Foley, Bruce Steel, & Anthony Zaleski, played in the Palm Beach High School Baseball All Star Game! Here’s a clip from the article highlighting Zaleski’s play:

“Even with all the good pitching coming at them, Cardinal Newman’s Anthony Zaleski showed that chicken ain’t nothing but a bird in his two at bats. Zaleski drew a walk his first time through the order, and lined a single past the shortstop in the bottom of the eighth.” – Rick Duteau,

The Seniors weren’t the only Crusaders at this event, the legendary Jack Kokinda, former Crusader Baseball coach and teacher, threw the ceremonial first pitch and everyone was excited to see him there!
